At Discernity, we always look forward to the summer season, because that means we get to work with interns who are bright, rising stars in our industry!
Our paid intern, Kenny Brown, did a lot of great work for us this summer. We were glad to offer him the opportunity to learn more about internet connectivity before he heads to Drexel this fall to expand his knowledge of cybersecurity.
We could go on about Kenny, but we’ll let you learn more about him in his own words!
Internship Role
The majority of my work was with the field team at Discernity. I was often called directly onto a work site and either helped my direct superiors with whatever task they were completing, or I was occasionally given work of my own to finish while they handled something more complex. I pulled fiber optic cable, learned how to fusion splice, helped install and program switches into apartment units, installed TVs, and surveyed worksites (including the roofs of high-rise apartment complexes).
In addition to the on-site work I completed, I did have some asynchronous work. I helped to fill out databases, categorize and assign unit numbers to access points, and help create and implement programs such as customer chatbots and connection software.
Computer Science
I want to learn more about computers because I’ve grown up with technology. As computers became more integrated into my life, and especially over the lockdown, understanding how computers and the wider internet works became more important to me. My internship at Discernity has helped me develop a greater sense of the multiple levels of connections that the Internet has to go through to reach an average customer.
Drexel, Career Path
My major at Drexel is Computing Security and Technology, which is focused on cybersecurity. This major will be of a greater benefit to me because I plan to go into the cybersecurity field. I’m not sure what exact position I would like, but I know I would like to be on the blue team! (The blue team in cybersecurity focuses on defense rather than attack.) Because of this internship, I have a better understanding of how many different points there are to attack and defend a network, due to the multitude of different entry points into a system I have worked on this summer. This additional knowledge and experience should give me a good starting point as I work through my degree at Drexel.
Hobbies
I like rock climbing and Brazilian Jujitsu, and I have recently started basketball!
From the Discernity team, thanks for all the time and effort you gave us this past summer, Kenny! Good luck at Drexel and beyond!
