Louisville-Based Internet Service Provider Adds COO/GC
Discernity, a leading provider of high-speed internet and television services for multifamily dwelling units (MDUs) in the Midwest and Southeast, has announced Steve Werner as the company’s newest Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel. Steve is charged with oversight of company operational functions such as project management and implementation, technology, customer experience, and legal and compliance matters.
Steve spent the past 7 years immersed in MDU building technology, serving for almost 5 years as the head of technology for a major MDU developer in the Midwest where he built networks, access and automation solutions, and built a platform for better Internet delivery, net operating income (NOI), and service for MDU’s. Steve moved over to the company whose MDU Internet platform he helped build in 2019 taking over their sales, customer service, operations, and legal. Under Steve’s leadership that provider grew its number of MDU’s served nearly 5-fold, saw its customer service reputation skyrocket, and added an average additional $9,000 per unit in value for their customers ($1.8MM in cap value per ~200 MDU property). Chris Chase, CEO of Discernity, brought Steve in to bring these type of results and high level of quality to Discernity’s operations, building on Discernity’s already high standard of customer service and execution.
Werner’s fascination with technology began along with the emergence of the early World Wide Web when he was a teenager in 1990s. After graduating from Indiana University with a double major in political science and philosophy, Werner turned his technology hobby and side-gig into a career in Web development and IT management. Later, he attended law school at night while he served as the Webmaster of the third-largest international service club organization and then the City of Indianapolis. After graduating from law school, he spent 7 years as in-house or real-estate counsel to several large or very fast-growing organizations before combining his passions for technology and real estate into a new career again.
Werner and his wife, Sarah, live in Indianapolis with their three children. He enjoys being an active member of the Indy community, including having served as an adjunct professor of law at Indiana University McKinney School of Law and board member and volunteer for the non-profit Reach for Youth, Inc.. When Steve is not working on putting Internet into apartment buildings he is playing or enjoying music (sometimes in the family band with the kids), brewing or tasting beer, or running with his dog.
